Since the invention of facelift surgery, there has been a continuing evolution of techniques. Facelift surgeries started at the beginning of the last century as skin-only lifting and this technique was applied for a long time until the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) techniques were developed. Demonstrating the anatomy of the SMAS allowed the elevation and lifting of deep tissues without damaging the facial nerve, and led to the development of modifications that resulted in more effective solutions over time. Although different variations of SMAS techniques have been described by many authors in facelift surgeries, the real changes have occurred mostly in the depth and extent of the dissections.

In this article, various face and neck lift techniques are updated and discussed in detail by the masters of each specific technique. I believe that, having such an exceptional scope and depth from these outstanding authors will make this specific issue one of the most valuable references not only for the novice surgeon starting facelift surgery, but also experienced surgeons looking to further their knowledge and improve their results.
