Introduction
Silicone oil is widely used as a retinal tamponade agent in vitreoretinal surgery, particularly for retinal detachment repair in cases of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), giant retinal tear (GRT), ocular trauma, or proliferative diabetic retinopathy, among others. Unexplained vision loss after silicone oil removal was first described by Newsome and colleagues in 2004 [1], and was then reported by several authors [2], [3], [4]. The overall incidence of visual loss following silicone oil removal is 3.3%, with a high rate (50%) observed in macula-on detachments associated with GRT [5]. We report here multimodal imaging investigations in a case of central scotoma after silicone oil removal in a patient treated for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) due to a GRT.
