Dr. Emily Steinhagen was born in New York, NY, and grew up in New Jersey prior to attending the Williams College, where she earned her BA in Political Science cum laude and played hockey. She then attended the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, NY, receiving her MD in 2008. Dr. Steinhagen completed her residency in Surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2015, spending 2 years at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as a Clinical Research fellow from 2010 to 2012.

She completed her Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at the University of Chicago Medical Center. From there, she came to Cleveland, OH, joining the team at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. She has immersed herself in trainee education and development, serving as the Clerkship Director for the 3rd Year Medical Student General Surgery Clerkship, the Co-Director of the General Surgery Mentorship Program, and Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency. In addition, she is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University. Throughout this time, she has been very productive academically with multiple peer-reviewed publications, textbook chapters, and national presentations.

Emily thoroughly enjoys working with trainees, learning new skills, and helping patients regain their quality of life. Outside of medicine, she loves to spend time with family (her husband, Allen, and her children, Judah 11, and Aviva, 8), coaching her children's hockey team, reading (historical fiction), baking, and cake decorating.

On behalf of the readers and staff of Clinics of Colon and Rectal Surgery, I sincerely thank Dr. Steinhagen for serving as a Guest Editor and for providing us with a superb issue on Cancer in Inflammatory Disease Patients.
