Addiction and Harmful Consequences: Lived Experiences of Arabic-speaking Refugees in Berlin
Hintergrund und Fragestellung: Refugees face multi-dimensional mental health stressors stemming from pre- and post-migration challenges that may increase their risk to substance use. Although recent attention has been growing on exploring drug-seeking behavior among refugees, our understanding remains limited regarding the consequences associated with addiction within this humanitarian context.
Aim: This exploratory study aims to illuminate and delve into the multifaceted consequences of addiction as perceived and experienced by Arabic-speaking refugees in Germany.
Methoden/Erläuterung des Versorgungsprojektes: Thirteen Arabic-speaking refugees undergoing addiction treatment participated in in-depth qualitative interviews conducted at two rehabilitation centers in Berlin between 2021 and 2022. Coding and thematic analysis were conducted by two researchers using MAXQDA software.
Ergebnisse/Erfahrungen, Erwartungen: Participants articulate the profound and complicated consequences of addiction on three main dimensions: (1) mental and physical health, (2) relationships, (3) employment and integration prospects with the host community.
Diskussion und Schlussfolgerung: The findings underscore the urgent need to address the multifaceted consequences of addiction among refugees in Germany. This study enhances our understanding of the complexities surrounding addiction and informs targeted strategies aimed at mitigating its harmful consequences within both refugee and host communities.
