Fetal, Neonatal and Pediatric Neuroradiology
Stephen Kralik, Nilesh Desai, Avner Meoded, Thierry A.G.M. Huisman. Fetal, Neonatal and Pediatric Neuroradiology. 1st Edition. 864 pp. ISBN: 9780323796958–eBook ISBN:Ù780323796965
There are medical textbooks that are read for examination preparation. Other books serve as a quick reference in everyday clinical practice. This book can be used for both purposes.
The four authors from Texas Children's Hospital present the entire field of pediatric neuroradiology on almost 900 colored pages with thousands of high-quality, sufficiently large MRI, CT, ultrasound, and radiographic images. The book comprises five parts: normal development; brain; head and neck; spine; and finally differential diagnoses, summaries, and pitfalls. The included e-book contains bonus material on normal anatomy and imaging techniques.
Each chapter starts with a brief introduction, followed by a comprehensive description of individual topics. Outstanding representative images are juxtaposed with bulleted lists of key points in a ratio of around 50:50. Where appropriate, the radiological images are complemented by schematic illustrations (e.g., brain abnormalities), histological images (e.g., tumors), or depictions of the namesakes (e.g., a longhorn in corpus callosum agenesis). The anomalies shown are described in the text and, in some cases, indicated by arrows in the image. A good selection of background information on the disorder and its imaging is presented in a clear manner. For those who wish to delve deeper into the subject, individual references are provided. In addition to a thorough presentation of individual diseases, the book also offers brief, illustrated overviews of differential diagnoses (e.g., posterior fossa cysts, intraventricular tumors) and clinically relevant iatrogenic disorders (e.g., drug toxicity, radiation effects).
Both the radiologically interested pediatric neurologist and the pediatric radiologist will find this book to be a rich source for swift orientation in daily work, as well as easily digestible chapters to deepen his or her knowledge in a special area. Whether you are looking for a guide to locate of the sulcus centralis or the specific radiological features of SURF1-associated mitochondrial disorder, you will quickly find it in this book.
Some minor errors are doubtless due to the fact that this is the first edition. Given the size and weight of the book, a hardcover would have been preferable, but this seems hypercritical given the very reasonable price.
Particularly the visual learner, from trainee to full-grown expert, will benefit from the excellent didactic design and keep the book close at hand.
