A number of recent preparative improvements have made nitrile oxides, R-C≡N→O, easily accessible starting materials for the synthesis of a wide variety of heterocyclic systems, some of them almost inaccessible by any other route. The vast majority of the reactions discussed in this review are 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions leading to five-membered rings. The survey concludes with a selected number of reactions which do not fall under the above classification, but which are considered to be of preparative interest.
