The currently known methods for the synthesis of sulfenyl halides, especially sulfenyl chlorides, are discussed. In addition to sulfenyl halides in the narrower sense, in which the halosulfenyl residue is linked to a carbon atom, consideration is also given to compounds in which the linkage with the halosulfenyl residue is via nitrogen, phosphorus, or an acyl group.
