Olefins undergo two different types of reaction with mercury(II)-salts: addition reactions (solvomercuration), and redox reactions in which the olefin is oxidized and the mercuryII is reduced. This review is directed toward the latter type of reaction which has hitherto not yet been exclusively summarized in the chemical literature.
