Recent synthetic applications of permanganate to organic chemistry are reviewed. The usefulness of the reagent as a classical oxidant and as a new reagent, being transferred into an organic phase or incorporated on to solid supports, or being applied as an organic salt are surveyed. Recent views on the mechanism of the permanganate oxidation of organic compounds are also discussed. 1. Introduction 2. Oxidation of Alkenes 3. Oxidation of Alkynes 4. Oxidation of Alkanes and Alkyl Side Chains 5. Oxidation of Alcohols 6. Oxidation of Organic Nitrogen Compounds 7. Oxidation of Organic Sulfur Compounds 8. Oxidation of Ketones, Aldehydes, and Carboxylic Acids and Applications in Degradation Reactions 9. Special Manganese(VII) and Manganese(VI) Oxidants 10. Other Applications of Permanganate 11. Addenda 12. Miscellaneous Applications
