Allylic diethylboranes are obtained from olefins via metalation with (trimethylsilylmethyl)potassium (generated in situ from bis(trimethylsilylmethyl)mercury and potassium sand) and subsequent reaction with chlorodiethylboron. The allylic boranes react with deuterium oxide to give isomerized olefins, monodeuterated in the allylic position.
