Phenanthrenes and chrysenes are readily obtained by reaction of biphenyl-2-diazonium tetrafluoroborates or 2-phenylnaphthalene-1-diazonium tetrafluoroborates, respectively, with mono-substituted acetylenes in pyridine at 0°C.
