A convenient four step procedure for the synthesis of 2,4-dihydroxy-2H-1.4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one (6), a bioactive natural product from Gramineae, is described that avoids disadvantages of hitherto existing methods and affords 6 in 60% overall yield.
