A total synthesis of neopatulin (1; 6-hydroxy-4H-furo [3,2-c]pyran-2(6H)-one) a redox isomer of patulin (2; 4-hydroxy-4H-furo[3,2-c]pyran-2(6H)-one), which is produced by Penicillium and Aspergillus spp., is described starting from either D-lyxose or furfuryl alcohol.
