The multistep synthesis of hitherto unknown 5,6-dihalo-3-hydroxypyridines starting from commercially available 2-hydroxy-5-nitropyridine is described. The suitability of cheap 2-aminomethylfuran (furfurylamine) for the preparation of the title compounds in a novel two step process was also explored.
