N-Alkoxycarbonyl-L-homoserine lactones (α-alkoxycarbonyl- amino-γ-butyrolactones) were prepared by selective esterification of L-aspartic acid followed by N-protection, precipitation of the dicyclohexylammonium salts, chemoselective reduction with lithium borohydride, and cyclization to the corresponding γ-lactones during isolation.
