Stereocontrolled processes are described for the synthesis of 3-alkyl-4-carboxy-2-azetidinones and of 3-alkyl-L-aspartic acids of high enantiomeric purity starting from (S)-1-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-4-carboxy-2-azetidinone.
