The Bartoli methodology provides a convenient route for the synthesis of 7-formylindole, either indirectly via an improved metalation of 7-bromoindole using sodium hydride/butyllithium or two equivalents of butyllithium or directly by use of an acetal protected 2-nitrobenzaldehyde and vinylmagnesium bromide.
