Some observations resulting from the use of optically active diphenyloxazinone derivatives 1 and 4 as glycine anion equivalents are reported. The utility of the method is demonstrated in the synthesis of (S,S)-2,6-diamino-2-hydroxymethylheptanedioic acid (7).
