Phenylhydrazones, including p-nitrophenylhydrazones, may be cyclized readily to the corresponding indoles using 96% formic acid under microwave irradiation. On the other hand, irradiation in the presence of Montmorillonite KSF gives mainly unreacted hydrazones.
