Azidoacetonitrile (1) reacts with an alcohol or thiol and hydrogen chloride to form 1-alkoxy[1-alkylthio]-2-azidoethan-l-iminium chlorides (Pinner salts) 3 which are sulfhydrolyzed to give O-alkyl azidothioacetates 4a,b and alkyl azidodithioacetates 4c,d.
