Efficient syntheses of α-halo-α,β-unsaturated lactams from the corresponding saturated and unsaturated lactams are described. These substrates undergo palladium-catalyzed Stille and Suzuki couplings, furnishing α-substituted-α,β-unsaturated lactams in good yields.
