The synthesis of a C21 to C34 fragment of FK506 is described. Fragment 30a is constructed by a regio- and stereoselective Takai coupling of alkyne 4 and the aldehyde 5 which in turn was prepared from 3-deoxy-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-α-D-ribohexofuranose (16).
