A three step synthesis of bis[1H-imidazol-4(5)-yl]ethane (4a) and the trityl derivatives 4b-e, involving cyclization of α,ω-dichloroalkane-diones 3 with formamidine acetate in liquid ammonia as a solvent, is reported.
