1,4-cyclohexanedione-2,5-dicarboxylic methyl ester can be condensed with 2,4-diaminophenol, aromatized and cyclized to 3,10-diamino-2,9-dihydroxyquino [2,3-b]acridine-7(5H),14(12H)-dione in a one-pot procedure. The product must be handled with care to avoid oxidation; isolation as the hydrochloride salt allows convenient manipulation and purification to polymerization quality material.
