Reaction of the glutamic acid derived organozinc reagent 3 with aromatic iodides under palladium catalysis at 50 °C gives homophenylalanine derivatives 5; conversion of adduct 5a to Z-homophenylalanine methyl ester 6 using LiOMe in methanol establishes the usefulness of this method for the preparation of homophenylalanine derivatives.
