The conversion of hydroxycarboxylic acids with primary or secondary hydroxy functions into the corresponding vinyl esters was successfully achieved under basic conditions in presence of vinyl acetate and palladium(II) acetate as catalyst. Side reactions, which were previously frequently interfering with these transformations, have been studied and reaction conditions optimised to reach maximum product yield.
