The fluorinated propargyl glycol, HO(CF3)2CC≡CC(CF3)2,OH, was combined in a 1:2.7:3.1 ratio with triflic anhydride and pyridine in methylene dichloride to give bistriflate TfO(CF3)2CC≡CC(CF3)2 OTf in 63% yield. The bistriflate reacted with lithium chloride or lithium bromide in DMF solvent to afford [(CF3)2C=CX]2 (X = Cl, 26%; X = Br, 80%). Reaction with iodide ion or other nucleophiles gave complex reaction mixtures. Attempted dehalogenation of [(CF3)2C=CBr]2 is also discussed.
