The synthesis of terminally functionalized alkanes, which represent potential compounds for formation of self-assembled monolayers, is reported. The alkanes described are substituted at one end with a trichloro- or trialkoxysilyl group suitable for linkage to a hydroxylated silicon surface and at the other hand with a vinyl or amino group for further functionalization.
