A very efficient and regiospecific synthesis of androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione 3-hydrazone from 3-thioxoandrosta-1,4-dien-17-one is described. The selectivity of the α,β-unsaturated thioketone towards various N-nucleophiles is investigated.
