The synthesis of O-trimethylsilyl-5a-α-tocopheryl magnesium bromide (α-tocopheryl Grignard compound), the first organometallic vitamin E derivative, is described. The products of the reaction between α-tocopheryl-Grignard and carbonyl compounds are strongly dependent on the conditions used in the hydrolysis of the magnesium salt intermediates. In addition, a simple and convenient method to determine the content of the organomagnesium reagent in reaction mixtures is presented.
