In this review, we demonstrate that the Pummerer reaction can be utilized for the preparation of complex carbocyclic and heterocyclic ring systems. The generation of thionium ions from sulfoxides and their subsequent inter- or intramolecular reactions with π-bonds as an entry to complex ring systems is described in some detail.
