A very simple and efficient method for the synthesis of symmetric polymethylated terpyridines in good yields is reported. It is based on the condensation of a bis-pyridinium iodide, with α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and ammonium acetate in formamide. The bis-pyridinium iodide was prepared from commercially available 2,6-diacetylpyridine, with iodine in pyridine.
