Perioperative nutrition in inflammatory bowel disease.
Perioperative nutrition plays a main role in the treatment of patients with inflammatory
bowel disease since they are often malnourished and undergo numeral operative interventions
during their history. The clinical effect of a pre or postoperatively administered
nutrition will be discussed in relation to complication rate, recurrence rate and
costs. Use of total parenteral or enteral nutrition is not necessary in routine abdominal
surgery. In the majority of cases the cost effective and complication reduced application
of D5W is sufficient.
Key words:
Crohns disease - Ulcerative colitis - Surgery - Malnutrition - Perioperative nutrition
