Amino acid bridged dicatechol ligands 1 a - e are synthesized by a stepwise coupling procedure. First 2,3-dimethoxybenzoic acid (2) is coupled with the amino acid (3 a - e) followed by a second coupling step of the obtained derivatives 4 a - e with 2,3-dimethoxybenzyl amine (5). As coupling reagents for the amide bonds either DDC/NHS or EDC/HOBt are used. In the final step of the reaction sequence the methyl ethers of the ligand precursors 6 a - e are potential building blocks for metallo-supramolecular chemistry.
