Hafnium(IV) chloride tetrahydrofuran complex (1 : 2), HfCl4 · (THF)2, which is commercially available, is a highly effective catalyst for the selective esterification of primary alcohols with carboxylic acids in the presence of secondary alcohols or aromatic alcohols. The present method is especially useful as an environmentally and industrially ideal condensation.
