ABSTRACT

Vena cava filters play an important role in the management of thromboembolic disease. With careful adherence to preinsertion evaluation, placement technique, and postplacement management, these devices may offer substantial benefits to the patients at risk. Caval filtration devices are reviewed in this article with particular emphasis on those available on the U.S. market. Clinical assessment, technical characteristics, filter performance, and complications are discussed. Vena cava imaging issues pertinent to filter insertion are reviewed. A brief overview of temporary and retrievable filters is included.
