Abstract
Modifying nutrition is one of the most important therapeutic principles in arterial hypertension, WHO says in its update recommendations. In the order of importance these modifications are: weight reduction, sodium chloride (common salt) reduction, normalisation of alcohol consumption and possibly additively active measures such as potassium supplementation, employing n-3 fatty acids and a vegetarian dietary regime. These items will often reduce blood pressure sufficiently well to normalise a mild blood pressure increase. The efficacy of the necessary drug treatment is definitely enhanced by an accompanying modification of dietary habits. No side effects may be expected from such non-drug measures.
