ABSTRACT

Permanent balloon occlusion or surgical resection of the internal carotid artery (ICA) has been performed for the treatment of patients with progressive head and neck carcinoma or aneurysms involving the ICA. Temporary (test) occlusion of the ICA with physiological monitoring can be used in an attempt to predict which patients have sufficient collateral circulation to tolerate such procedures without risk of stroke. This article will discuss the rationale for balloon test occlusion (BTO) and the advantages and disadvantages of various means of physiological monitoring.
