Abstract
Thymic tissue can be encountered in about 20 % of mediastinal teratomas. It is found located at the periphery of the teratoma mass. Although rare, mediastinal teratoma arising within the thymus can be seen. It has not been defined yet whether the thymus is an organ simply attached to the teratoma or whether the teratoma arises from the thymus.
The authors present here two illustrative cases of mediastinal teratoma, one raised within the thymus and the other closely attached to the thymic remnant, to discuss the cellular origin of mediastinal teratomas.
Résumé
Le tissu thymique peut être retrouvé dans environ 20 % des tératomes médiastinaux. Celui-ci est retrouvé le plus souvent à la périphérie du tératome. Quoique rare, le tératome médiastinal est plus fréquent lorsque le thymus est vu. Il n'a pas encore été précisé si le thymus est un organe attaché au tératome ou si le tératome se développe à partir du thymus. Ici les auteurs présentent deux cas de tératomes médiastinaux, l'un développé à l'intérieur du thymus et l'autre contenant des résidus thymiques. Les auteurs discutent l'origine cellulaire des tératomes médiastinaux.
Resumen
Puede encontrarse tejido tímico en alrededor al 20 % de los teratomas mediastínicos. Se sitúan generalmente en la periferia del teratoma. Aunque raros, pueden verse ocasionalmente teratomas mediastínicos de origen tímico. No se ha aclarado aún si el timo está simplemente adherido al tumor o si el éste se origina realmente en el timo. Los autores presentan dos casos demostrativos de teratoma mediastínico, uno que se originaba en el timo y el otro que contenía restos tímicos para discutir el origen celular de estos tumores.
Zusammenfassung
In etwa 20 % der mediastinalen Teratome kann Thymusgewebe gefunden werden. Es wird meist im Bereich der Peripherie von Teratomen gefunden. Allerdings können, wenn auch selten, mediastinale Teratome aus dem Thymusgewebe selbst entstehen. Bisher konnte aufgrund der beschriebenen Fälle nicht genau definiert werden, ob der Thymus in diesen Fällen nur dem Teratom anliegt oder das Teratom aus dem Thymus entsteht.
In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden zwei Fälle vorgestellt. Bei dem ersten Patienten entstand das mediastinale Teratom aus dem Thymusgewebe, bei dem anderen war es nur mit dem Thymusgewebe adhärent. Der zelluläre Ursprung der mediastinalen Teratome wird diskutiert.
