Die endoskopische Mukosaresektion (EMR) umfasst die Abtragung von Mukosa und (zumindest) teilweise Submukosa, sodass die Namensgebung eigentlich unvollständig ist. Deswegen wurde auch vorgeschlagen, nur von endoskopischer Resektion oder von endoskopischer Submukosa-Dissektion - vor allem für die neueren Techniken (s. u.) - zu sprechen. Der Einfachheit halber wird im Folgenden aber weiterhin die Abkürzung EMR verwendet.
