Dr. Mark L. Welton is Chief, Colorectal Surgery Service and an Associate Professor of Surgery, Stanford University, Stanford, CA. Mark was born in San Rafael, CA, and received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis. He earned his M.D. degree from the University of California Los Angeles School of Medicine in Los Angeles, CA. He completed a general surgery residency at University of California Los Angeles, which included 2 years of gastrointestinal research. His training in Colon and Rectal Surgery occurred at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Following his fellowship, Dr. Welton joined the faculty at the University of California San Francisco. In 2001, he moved to Stanford University where he serves as Chief of Colorectal Surgery.

Dr. Welton has authored or coauthored over 50 book chapters and peer review publications. He is an associate editor of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum and a reviewer for several prestigious journals. He is a member of multiple medical societies and serves as the president of the Northern California Society of Colorectal Surgeons. Dr. Welton is an active researcher and has several active externally funded research projects. In addition, he maintains a busy clinical practice in which the management of sexually transmitted diseases plays a prominent role. He also makes time to educate residents and medical students.

Mark, his wife Cindy, and their three children, Jessica (15), Lindsay (13), and Emery (10), live in Menlo Park, CA. When not working, Mark enjoys swimming, mountain and road biking, and watching his children’s sporting events.
