Double Urethral Obstruction in a Neonate - A Case Report

Abstract

Posterior urethral valves are the most common cause of lower urinary tract obstruction in a male child, generally occurring as an isolated anomaly. Congenital anterior urethral diverticulum, although less common, can also cause urethral obstruction. We report a rare combination of the two anomalies in which the proximal, more severe anomaly prevented the initial expression of the other.

Résumé

Les valves de l'urètre postérieur sont la cause la plus habituelle d'obstruction du tractus urinaire inférieur chez un garçon. Elles surviennent généralement comme une malformation isolée. Les diverticules congénitaux antérieurs de l'urètre sont considérés comme moins habituels mais peuvent aussi être une cause d'obstruction urétrale. Nous rapportons la rare association de ces deux anomalies. L'anomalie proximale étant la plus sévère.

Resumen

Las válvulas de uretra posterior son la causa más común de obstrucción de la vía urinaria inferior en el varón y ocurren generalmente como una anomalía aislada. El divertículo congénito de la uretra anterior es menos común pero también puede causar obstrucción uretral. Presentamos una rara combinación de las dos anomalías en la que la más proximal oscureció la expresión clínica inicial de la más distal.

Zusammenfassung

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein 15 Tage alter Knabe vorgestellt, bei dem nicht nur posteriore Urethralklappen, sondern zusätzlich ein urethrales Divertikulum vorlagen, die zu einer Obstruktion geführt haben. Das gleichzeitige Vorkommen von Urethralklappen sowie einem Harnröhrendivertikel ist außerordentlich selten, weshalb der Fall hier vorgestellt wird.
