Vorstellung eines neuen Plaqueindex zur Kontrolle und Motivation kieferorthopädischer Patienten

Zusammenfassung

Durch festsitzende kieferorthopädische Apparaturen werden Plaqueretentionsnischen geschaffen und die tägliche Mundhygiene erschwert. Plaqueindizes werden in der zahnärztlichen Praxis erhoben, um die Motivation der Patienten zu fördern und die Mundhygiene zu verbessern. Die dabei eingesetzten Plaqueindizes sind für die Erfordernisse von Zähnen ohne kieferorthopädische Apparaturen konzipiert. Bei kieferorthopädischen Patienten entstehen typische kariöse Läsionen und Plaqueansammlungen insbesondere an den Zahnoberflächen, die an das Bracket angrenzen. Diesem Aspekt tragen die üblicherweise angewendeten Plaqueindizes nur unzureichend Rechnung. Ein neuer Plaqueindex, der den speziellen Anforderungen von kieferorthopädischen Patienten entspricht, wird vorgestellt.

Abstract

Fixed orthodontic appliances introduce mechanical plaque traps and difficulties to perform oral hygiene properly due to the bracket and wire appliance. For motivation and improvement of oral hygiene in orthodontic patients, plaque indices are often applied. The commonly used indices are designed for the use in teeth without orthodontic appliances. However, in orthodontic patients typical carious lesions and plaque accumulation are seen in areas adjacent to brackets. This aspect is not adequately considered in common plaque indices. The present article describes a new plaque index especially for patients with fixed orthodontic appliances.
