Zusammenfassung
Anliegen Abschätzung des Suchtpotenzials von Methylphenidat. Methode Opiatabhängige Patienten (n = 81), in Substitutionsbehandlung wurden als „Suchtexperten” zum Konsum von Methylphenidat (z. B. Ritalin®) befragt. Ergebnisse 24 Patienten gaben eine Einnahme an, davon 14 in missbräuchlicher Absicht. Als Bezugsquelle nannten 11 (78 %) Szenekontakte. Die Einnahme erfolgte meist intravenös (62 %). 71 % konsumierten es 1 - 5-mal. Eine Veränderung des Suchtdrucks (hier eine Abnahme) wurde nur bezüglich Heroin angegeben. Die Wirkung wird als amphetaminähnlich, aber insgesamt als schlecht bis mäßig beschrieben, entsprechend gaben 12 Patienten (86 %) an, sie würden Methylphenidat nicht mehr einnehmen. Schlussfolgerungen Es gibt Hinweise auf ein Missbrauchsverhalten bezüglich Methylphenidat, das Missbrauchspotenzial erscheint jedoch gering.
Abstract
Objective Assessment of the addictive potential of methylphenidate (MPH). Methods We chose 81 opiate addicts being in substitution therapy as „experts in substance abuse” and questioned them for their experiences concerning the use of methylphenidate. Results 24 patients had used MPH previously, 14 of them had misused MPH for its psychotropic properties without having an attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adulthood. Most of them (11) bought it on the scene, two took it from their children's medication, one did both. Intravenous intake was most common (62 %), 71 % of subjects misused it five times or less. If any, there was a mild decrease of craving for heroin, only, not for any other drugs. Although methylphenidate effects were considered to be best compared with amphetamine, the drug effects were described as moderate to poor. Therefore, only 10 % of the patients (10 %) would reuse MPH, if available. Conclusions According to the „experienced” drug users, there is a mild to moderate abuse potential of methylphenidate. However, its effects are not comparable with amphetamine or cocaine.
