The letter from Dr. Gravante and colleagues includes a good retrospective analysis of the incidence of gastrointestinal pathology in patients on the waiting list for liver transplantation. As forecasted, the most common abnormalities were found to be esophageal varices and hypertensive gastropathy, while colonic lesions were found to be less common, and the analysis did not show any significant correlation among the clinical variables. I also agree with the conclusion that colonoscopy should only be performed as indicated by the guidelines for colorectal cancer screening.
