Abstract
Parthenin, an α-methylene-γ-lactone sesquiterpene isolated from Parthenium hysterophorus is shown to possess antiamoebic activity. This activity was tested in vitro against axenic and polyxenic cultures of Entamoeba histolytica and was found to be comparable to that of the standard drug metronidazole. The acute toxicity of parthenin has been determined and this natural product was found effective in experimental hepatic amoebiasis.
