This work is an extended version of a lecture dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dr.
med., Dr. med. h. c. Rudolf Thauer which was held, under the title “Reduction of energy
consumption by natural and artificial hypothermia”, by one of the authors (H. J. B.)
on February, 14th, 1987 during a celebration at the Justus Liebig University of Gießen,
FRG. It is partially based upon results which were submitted to the medical faculty
of the Georg August University of Göttingen as an M. D. thesis (D. S.).It has been financially supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (SFB 330
