Lack of Effect of the Antidepressant Compound Bupropion on Pineal Indoleamines

Abstract

The effects of the antidepressant compound bupropion were studied on rat pineal indoleamines. A pharmacologically relevant dose of bupropion either acutely (20 mg/kg) or chronically (20 mg/kg/day for 12 days) had no significant effect on pineal melatonin synthesis or other pineal indoleamine concentrations. The significance of this finding is discussed in relation to the lack of effect of bupropion on β-adrenergic receptors.

Zusammenfassung

Die Wirkungen der antidepressiven Verbindung Bupropion wurden an den Indolaminen des Corpus pineale der Ratte untersucht. Eine pharmakologisch relevante akute Verabreichung von 20 mg/kg Bupropion blieb ebenso wirkungslos auf die Melatoninsynthese der Zirbeldrüse oder auf andere Indolaminkonzentrationen des Corpus pineale wie eine chronische Dosis von 20 mg/kg/die für 12 Tage. Die Bedeutung dieses Versuchsergebnisses wird erörtert insbesondere hinsichtlich des Fehlens einer Wirkung des Bupropions auf die β-adrenergischen Rezeptoren.
