Abstract
In the S-deficiency hypothesis, the changes in sleep in depression are attributed to the deficiency of a sleep/waking dependent process (Process S) involved in sleep regulation. It is further proposed that the abnormally low level of Process S is normalized by prolonged waking, and that this normalization is the basis for the antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation. Various aspects of the hypothesis have been tested in a number of studies which are reviewed. Data from healthy elderly subjects and from depressives also indicate that the decay rate of Process S may be reduced in advanced age and depression. Napping may contribute to lowering the level of S at sleep onset.
Zusammenfassung
Der mangelhafte Aufbau eines schlaf-wach-abhängigen Prozesses der Schlafregulation (,,Prozeß S'') wird in der ,,S-Defizienz''-Hypothese als Ursache der Schlafstörung in der Depression angesehen. Es wird weiterhin angenommen, daß durch eine Verlängerung der Wachzeit der abnorm niedrige Spiegel von ,,Prozeß-S'' normalisiert wird, und daß diese Normalisierung die Grundlage für die antidepressive Wirkung des Schlafentzugs darstellt. Verschiedene Aspekte der Hypothese, die in einer Anzahl von Studien untersucht worden sind, werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit besprochen. Die an gesunden äl teren Probanden und an Depressiven erhobenen Befunde deuten darauf hin, daß bei for tgeschrittenem Alter und bei Depression der Abbau von ,,Prozeß-S'' verlangsamt ist. Schlafepisoden tagsüber können dazu beitragen, daß der,,S''-Spiegel zu Beginn des Nachtschlafes erniedrigt ist.
