The First Era of Lithium in Medicine
An Historical Note*

Abstract

A brief review is presented of the use of lithium salts in medical practice before 1949. The present-day indications for lithium, in the treatment of affective disorders, are seen to have been anticipated in the second half of the nineteenth century, although the rationale for its use was subsequently found to be erroneous.

Es wird eine kurze Übersicht zur Anwendung von Lithiumsalzen in der Medizin bis zum Jahre 1949 geben. Es scheint, als ob die heutigen Indikationen für Lithium bei der Behandlung affektiver Störungen schon in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts antizipiert wurden, obwohl die seinerzeit erdachte Begründung sich später als falsch erwies.
